A post shared on social media purports that Nike announced the termination of WNBA player Brittney Griner’s contract with the company.

Verdict: False

No such announcement has been made by Nike or Griner.

Fact Check:

Riley Gaines joined Idaho Governor Brad Little to support his policy requiring schools to block transgender women and girls from competing in women’s sports. Idaho Press reports that Gaines competed against transgender swimmer Lia Thomas in 2022 when they tied for fifth place at the NCAA Championship.

A post shared on Facebook post claims that Griner is too woke to represent the company the caption reads, “Nike Announces Termiɴatɪᴏn Oꜰ Cᴏɴtrᴀct Witʜ Brittnᴇʏ Griner Aftᴇr “Stronɢ Backlash” From Online Cᴏmmunity: “Wᴇ Need More Athletes Like Rilᴇy Gaineꜱ Anᴅ Less Wᴏkᴇ Brittney Griner!”

The claim is inaccurate. There is no credible news report that suggests that Griner has been fired by Nike. There is an announcement on Nike’s website. There is no such announcement from Griner on any of her social media accounts

News reports have indicated that Griner partnered with Nike. Griner appeared in a recent Nike ad. Swimmer Riley Gaines has criticized Nike in the past for their choices of partnerships. Fox News reported that Gaines slammed Nike for teaming up with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney. (RELATED: Washington Post Did Not Publish Article About Sikh Separatist Leader Faking Attack)

This is not the first time misinformation has circulated online. Check Your Fact recently debunked a claim an image showed Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich in a bomb shelter.
