FACT CHECK: Viral X Image Of Trump With Walz Family Is AI-Generated

A viral image shared on X purports to show 2024 Republican nominee and former President Donald Trump with members of 2024 Democratic vice presidential nominee and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s family.

Verdict: False

A content detection scan using the website “Hive Moderation” indicates the image has been created with artificial intelligence (AI). A media forensics and AI expert denied the image’s authenticity in an email to Check Your Fact.

Fact Check:

A new poll conducted by The New York Times and Siena College found Trump ahead of his 2024 Democratic opponent Vice President Kamala Harris, the outlet reported. The results are within the poll’s “three-percentage-point margin of error,” the outlet indicated.

The X image, viewed over 80,000 times as of writing, purports to show Trump with members of Walz’s family. In the image, Trump appears to pose for a selfie with a large group of people who are wearing “Walz’s for Trump” shirts. “BREAKING: The *entire* Tim Walz Family just endorsed Donald J. TRUMP for President 2024! What are your reactions?” the image’s caption reads.

The claim is false. A content detection scan using the website “Hive Moderation” indicates the image has been created with AI. According to the results of the same scan, the image is “96.3% likely to contain AI-generated or deepfake content.” The results also indicate the image was probably created using the program, Stable Diffusion. Check Your Fact reviewed the image and noticed the women standing beside Trump either have missing, extra, or deformed fingers, which is a hallmark of AI-generated images, according to BuzzFeed News.

Likewise, Check Your Fact did not find the image referenced in any recent credible news reports. In fact, the opposite is true. On Sept. 6, Snopes reported the image was AI-generated. Additionally, Trump has neither referenced the image on his official website nor on his TRUTH Social account.

Furthermore, Dr. Walter Scheirer, a media forensics and AI expert at the University of Notre Dame, denied the image’s authenticity in an email to Check Your Fact.

“This image was likely generated using AI. The hands of the women to the left of Trump look entirely unnatural. The rendering of the hand of Trump holding the hand of the woman to his immediate left is poor, with contorted fingers. The right hand of the second woman has too many fingers. Further, this image was not posted by a trustworthy news source, and there is no legitimate reporting on such a meeting between Trump and Waltz’s family,” Scheirer said.

Although the viral X image is AI-generated, eight members of Walz’s family have shown support for Trump. Former Republican Nebraska gubernatorial candidate Charles W. Herbster shared a photo of Walz’s family members wearing “Nebraska Walz’s for Trump” shirts to his verified X account on Sept. 4.
