FACT CHECK: No, Pennsylvania Senator Fetterman Did Not Say He Would Vote for Trump

A post shared on X claims that Democratic Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman remarked he plans to vote for former President Donald Trump.

Verdict: False

The video uploaded to X is only a clip of an interview with Fetterman. The full interview video indicates that Fetterman was referring to Pennsylvania’s voters when indicating likely support for Trump, not himself. Fetterman has already endorsed presidential candidate Kamala Harris.

Fact Check:

Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman joined Jeffrey Goldberg for an interview during The Atlantic‘s 2024 festival. The segment was titled, “In Conversation with Senator John Fetterman.”

A post made on X claims that Fetterman said he would be voting for presidential candidate Donald Trump. “DEMOCRATS PANIC: John Fetterman makes SHOCKING admission on Trump! BAD NEWS FOR KAMALA!,” The text included with the uploaded video reads.

The claim is false. The video uploaded to X is a 1 minute and 22 second clip of an interview that lasted close to thirty-two minutes. The recording of the full interview indicates that Fetterman was referring to Pennsylvania voters when discussing support for Trump, not himself.

When asked, “People you live with, people who vote for you, your friends, people you grow up with, what do they see in Donald Trump that makes them want to vote for him?,” Fetterman responded, “I think, I know some people that are like, ‘I personally think he’s a terrible person,’ or ‘I’m appalled by some of these things. But I fundamentally think that I’ll still vote for him.’ And I think a lot of Republicans already agree with that.”

A spokesperson for Fetterman told Check Your Fact, “In the clip he says: ‘I know some people that are like, ‘I personally think he is a terrible person or I am appalled by some of these things but I fundamentally think I’ll still vote for him.’ He’s not saying he feels this way, he is saying this is how people feel.”

“In this same interview he spoke at length about his support for VP Harris,” the spokesperson added. “He also campaigned for her in Pennsylvania this weekend and has campaigned with her in the commonwealth multiple times in the past month.”

Fetterman previously made a post on X expressing his support for presidential candidate Kamala Harris. “Proud to support and be all in for the next president, @KamalaHarris,” The caption reads. (RELATED: Did Travis Kelce Endorse Kamala Harris?)

News outlet Lead Stories has also debunked this claim. Check Your Fact has reached out to The Atlantic and Senator Fetterman’s office for comment.
