FACT CHECK: Video Shows Explosion In Yemen, Not Attack In Israel

A post shared on social media purportedly shows a video of a recent attack in Israel.

Verdict: False

The video is from Yemen in Aug.

Fact Check:

After Iran’s recent airstrikes against Israel, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei claimed in a public appearance that Iran’s resilience movement is “undeterred,” The Jerusalem Post reported. Khamenei defended the strike by saying it was punishment for Israel’s crimes and claimed Iran has a “duty” to confront Israel.

A post shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, purportedly shows a massive explosion caused by an Iranian attack in Israel. The video shows a large plume of fire as honking and yelling can be heard nearby.

“Videos circulating on Israeli Telegram groups show the effects of the Iranian strikes on Israel,” the caption reads. “Fires are still burning. Israel has asked people not to circulate the videos and or share the photos.”

The claim is inaccurate. The video dates back to August 2024 in Yemen. The video was uploaded to YouTube on Aug. 30, 2024 and shows a gas station explosion. Google translates the title that suggests the explosion occurred in Aden, Yemen “Scenes from the explosion of a gas station at the intersection of 90th Street #Mansoura in the capital #Aden.”

Another description of the video posted by CGTN Europe also places the video in Yemen. The description also indicated that five people were killed in the explosion and 13 were injured.  (Fact Check: Video Shows Iranian Missiles, Not Israeli Interceptors)

This is not the first time misinformation about world events has circulated online. Check Your Fact recently debunked a claim an X post showed a celebration of the killing of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah.
