Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz claims former President Donald Trump wants a national abortion ban.

Verdict: Misleading

While Trump has given conflicting messages on what he plans to do regarding a national abortion ban, he as recently stated he would veto any legislation that includes such an act. The official Republican platform also does not call for a nationwide abortion ban.

Fact Check:

A new poll reveals that Vice President Kamala Harris is losing support among young Latino men, but over half still plan to vote for her in Arizona, USA Today reported. She also has the support of 16% more of Latino voters in Nevada with one in five voters in the state being Latino, according to the outlet.

Walz shared a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, that suggests that Trump is seeking a national abortion ban. The post shows a video of Walz speaking to Fox News.

“Donald Trump and JD Vance are asking for a nationwide abortion ban,” the caption reads. “They see this as an election issue. @KamalaHarris and I see it as a woman’s right to make her own decisions about her own body.”

Trump has made differing remarks on a national abortion ban. During the March for Life demonstration in 2018, then-president Trump advocated for the Senate to pass a bill banning abortions after 20 weeks, according to The Hill. Trump called for the end of “late-term abortions nationwide.”

Trump also touted supporting the “Pain Capable bill,” which would ban all abortions after 20 weeks. The text of the bill suggested a prison sentence of up to five years.

Trump has called for the states to decide on legislation regarding abortion, according to CNN. However, in March of this year, the former president did state in a radio interview that he was “thinking of” backing a 15-week abortion ban with exceptions in the case of rape, incest and threats to a mother’s life, the outlet reported.

Only recently has Trump stated on several occasions that he will not sign a national abortion ban, including a post on Truth Social.

“EVERYONE KNOWS I WOULD NOT SUPPORT A FEDERAL ABORTION BAN, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, AND WOULD, IN FACT, VETO IT, BECAUSE IT IS UP TO THE STATES TO DECIDE BASED ON THE WILL OF THEIR VOTERS,” the post reads in all-caps.

There is no official policy that Trump has identified that includes an abortion ban. Trump’s spokesperson responded to Check Your Fact’s request for comment on Trump’s stance on abortion saying, “I’d point you to President Trump’s remarks at the debate and the numerous other times he’s addressed this issue in the past year.” (RELATED: No, Record Labels Are Not Considering Dropping Taylor Swift)

During the recent presidential debate Trump celebrated the fact that abortion is now a state’s issue and will be settled by state voters, according to ABC News.

Trump said, “And now states are voting on it. And for the first…Every legal scholar, every Democrat, every Republican, liberal, conservative, they all wanted this issue to be brought back to the states where the people could vote.”

The Republican Party official 2024 platform does not call for a national abortion ban.

It reads:

“We proudly stand for families and Life. We believe that the 14th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States guarantees that no person can be denied Life or Liberty without Due Process, and that the States are, therefore, free to pass Laws protecting those Rights. After 51 years, because of us, that power has been given to the States and to a vote of the People. We will oppose Late Term Abortion, while supporting mothers and policies that advance Prenatal Care, access to Birth Control, and IVF (fertility treatments).”
