FACT CHECK: Video Of Storm Taken By Man Trapped In Car Shows 2023 Mississippi Tornado, Not Hurricane Milton

A video shared on X allegedly shows footage taken by a man after being trapped in his car during Hurricane Milton.

Verdict: False

The video is miscaptioned. It was taken in 2023 and shows a tornado in Mississippi, not Hurricane Milton.

Fact Check:

A Category 3 storm, Hurricane Milton made landfall in Florida on Wednesday night, resulting in a death toll of at least 16, according to CBS News. Over 2 million people were without power in its aftermath on Friday as President Joe Biden plans to visit the area this weekend, the outlet reported.

An X video shows the point of view of a man stranded in his car amidst turbulent weather, strong winds causing debris to fly everywhere. “The roof is tearing off of my customer’s house,” he says shortly before debris breaks the driver’s side window, and the man moves to the passenger seat and cries for help.

“Dude gets caught inside hurricane Milton in his car,” the post reads. “SCARY.” (RELATED: Are Tolls Still In Place On Florida’s Hurricane Milton Evacuation Route?)

This video is miscaptioned, however. The footage was posted by a TikTok account called Pubity in August, when it garnered over 151,200 likes. Before that, it was uploaded to YouTube by The Weather Channel in June 2023. The top right corner of the video indicates that it was taken in Moss Point, Mississippi on June 19, 2023. A tornado, not a hurricane, struck the city on that day, according to local news outlet WLOX
