FACT CHECK: No, Keir Starmer Did Not Call London A ‘Great Muslim City’

A post shared on X claims United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer called London a “great Muslim city.”

Verdict: False

This claim is inaccurate. Starmer referred to London as “a great modern city,” not “Muslim.”

Fact Check:

Starmer will be visiting Samoa soon which has led to pressure on his stance on reparations, according to The Independent. A new Commonwealth secretary general will be elected at the summit held in Samoa, with all candidates in favor of reparations for countries affected by slavery, the outlet reported.

An X post alleges that Starmer has referred to London as a “great Muslim city.” The post shared the post in text and claims that Starmer made the statement on television.

The post reads, “Wow! Wow! Starmer on TV claiming LONDON IS A ‘GREAT MUSLIM CITY.'”

This claim is inaccurate. It appears to be a mishearing of a speech Starmer gave at the International Investment Summit on Oct. 14. This was an event in London in which global business leaders pledged investment into Britain, according to Reuters. Starmer at the 6:56 timestamp refers to London as “this great modern city.” This is corroborated by a transcript of his speech.

This is not the first time misinformation involving Starmer has spread online. Check Your Fact previously debunked a claim that he called for more houses to be built for asylum seekers and illegal immigrants.
