A post made on X claims Florida’s Hillsborough County closed an Election Day voting site.

Verdict: Misleading

The post shows an Early Voting site. A representative from the Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections Office confirmed the shown location was never meant to be an Election Day site.

Fact Check:

Social media users are claiming Hillsborough County closed an Election Day voting site. One user wrote, “American gets to election polling site and there is a sign out front that the polling station is closed down for Election Day. He tries to call the number and the number provided he says doesn’t work. Election Day shenanigans is starting… “They’re up to something.”

The claim is misleading. The video included with the post depicts North Tampa Branch Library, an Early Voting site. North Tampa Branch Library was not listed as as an Election Day voting site for the 2024 general election. A representative from the Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections Office told Check Your Fact “[t]he video shows a sign in front of an Early Voting site letting voters know that it is not an Election Day site.

“There was never any plan for that location to be an Election Day site,” the representative said.

On Election Day, the Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections office clarified on X that the North Tampa Branch Library is not an Election Day voting site. There is no evidence to show Hillsborough County closed any voting sites on Election Day that were supposed to be open.

The Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections Office website reminds voters that Election Day voting is different than Early Voting. The website reads, “As long as you’re registered to vote in Hillsborough County, you can vote in any Early Voting site we have open. This is different from Election Day voting, when you must vote in the polling place assigned to your precinct.”
