FACT CHECK: Is Trump Set To Make Great Britain A State?

A post made on X claims President-elect Donald Trump plans to make Great Britain a state.

Verdict: False

There is no evidence to show Trump plans to do this. Congress has the power to admit new states, not the president.

Fact Check:

Social media users are claiming Trump will work to make Great Britain a state. For example, an image on an X post contains text that reads, “Donald Trump is set to bring back a bill from 1869 which allows him to make Great Britain a state of America This will mean United Kingdom will live under America’s rules.”

The claim is false. There is no evidence to show Trump plans on making Great Britain a state. (RELATED: Did Britain’s Energy Price Cap Increase Due To The Closure Of Its Last Coal-Fired Power Plant?)

Congress has the power to admit new states, not the President. Article IV Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution states, “New States may be admitted by the Congress into this Union” and, “The Congress shall have Power to dispose of and make all needful Rules and Regulations respecting the Territory or other Property belonging to the United States.”

The post claims there is an 1869 bill that, if brought back, would allow Great Britain to become a state. This bill does not exist.

The claim could stem from Peter Preston’s 1999 satire titled “51st State.” Preston’s political satire tells the story of Great Britain leaving the European Union and almost joining the United States.
