FACT CHECK: Video Of Biden Speaking About Drones Is AI-Generated

A video shared on Facebook purports to show President Joe Biden discussing drones recently seen in the U.S.

Verdict: False

The claim is false, as a content detection scan using the website “TrueMedia.org” shows the video has been created using artificial intelligence (AI). A media forensics and AI expert denied the video’s authenticity in an email to Check Your Fact.

Fact Check:

Laura Ballman, a former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) officer, said drone sightings in the state of New Jersey could be a “classified exercise,” according to Fox News. Ballman made the remark on “Fox News Live,” the outlet reported.

The Facebook video, which has garnered over 600 likes as of writing, purports to show Biden discussing drones recently seen in the U.S.

“Listen, man, there are no drones over the United States. None anywhere. We don’t need Homeland Security. I mean, what even is that? The drones aren’t real, man. They’re manned aircraft by real people,” Biden appears to say in part in the same video.

The claim is false. A content detection scan using the website, “TrueMedia.org” indicates the video shows “substantial evidence of manipulation” and that it is AI-generated. (RELATED: Facebook Image Does Not Show Authentic Headline From Christian Website About Hunter Biden Pardon)

Likewise, Check Your Fact did not find the video referenced on the White House’s website or its verified social media accounts. Biden also has not publicly commented on the video on his verified personal or government X accounts.

In addition, Check Your Fact did not find the video referenced in any credible news reports about Biden or recent drone sightings in the U.S. Actually, the opposite is true. On Dec. 16, PolitiFact debunked the claim, indicating the video was AI-generated and labeling it a “deepfake.”

Furthermore, Dr. Walter Scheirer, a media forensics and AI expert at the University of Notre Dame, denied the video’s authenticity in an email to Check Your Fact.

“This video is likely the product of a deepfake algorithm. The synthetic audio track is of poor quality and is obviously satirical, with jokes being made about current events and people. The video has clearly been edited, as there is a visible rectangular artifact around Biden’s mouth, which has been reanimated in an attempt to match the audio,” Scheirer said.

Check Your Fact has also contacted the White House for comment.
