FACT CHECK: Does This Video Show A Ancient Text Discovered In Assad’s Home?
A post shared on social media purportedly shows a video of Syrian media report on a 500-year-old scroll in Bashar al-Assad’s house.
Verdict: False
The video shows an ancient Jewish scroll discovered in 2017.
Fact Check:
The Pentagon has recently confirmed that there are 2,000 U.S. troops deployed in Syria, but some units are reportedly “temporary,” according to Fox News. The previous number given by the Department of Defense was 900, but Pentagon Press Secretary Brig. Gen. Ryder said he learned the new number just this week, the outlet reported.
A post shared on Facebook purports an ancient text was found in Assad’s home. The video shows an alleged news report of the event.
The caption reads, “The Syrian media reports on an ancient 500-year-old Torah scroll that was discovered in the basements of Assad’s palace. Credit: Amir Tsarfati on telegram.”
The claim is inaccurate. The video dates back to 2017 when Tunisian broadcasters Attessia TV reported on a story about an ancient Jewish scroll that was discovered.
Google translates the title as “National Guard units seize a unique and valuable Jewish manuscript in the world.”(RELATED: No, Bashar al-Assad Did Not Announce He Is Starting His Own Podcast)
The man in the video is Brigadier General Khalifa al-Shaiban of the Tunisian National Guard.
The video is not related to the recent toppling of Syrian leader Basher al-Assad, after the dynasty’s 50-year reign, according to Sky News. U.S. diplomats in Syria are planning to meet with the group that overthrew Assad.
