FACT CHECK: No, Image Does Not Show George Soros In A Nazi Uniform
A post shared on social media purportedly shows side by side images of George Soros and allegedly a young image of Soros in a Nazi uniform.
Verdict: False
The image shows Oskar Groening, a bookkeeper at Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Fact Check:
Soros was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Joe Biden Saturday in a ceremony held at the White House, The Associated Press reported. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Denzel Washington also received the award, another four were awarded posthumously, according to the outlet.
A post shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, purports that Soros was preciously a Nazi. The post allegedly shows an image of Soros as a young man in a Nazi uniform.
The caption reads, “George Soros LITERALLY helped the Nazis kill Jews and then years later laughed about it and said how it made him euphoric and that he did not have any regrets. Now, Biden gives him a Medal of Freedom?”
The claim is inaccurate. The image is of Oskar Groening, a bookkeeper at Auschwitz-Birkenau, according to The Washington Post.
The details of Groening’s role in Auschwitz were described in various reports by Spiegel International. He worked in the concentration camp for two years and was responsible for handling the money found on the Jewish prisoners. He also stood guard when trains were unloaded.
Groening died in 2015 at 96 before serving his sentence for being an accessory to murder, according to CNN. CBS News shared the same image of Groening during the reports of the 2015 trial, at which he asked God for forgiveness. (RELATED: Did Australia Recently Declare George Soros A ‘Global Terrorist?’)
