Verdict: False
The claim has neither been referenced by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) nor the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), and there is no other evidence to support the claim.
Fact Check:
California residents impacted by the Eaton fire have sued utility company Southern California Edison, according to ABC News. The residents have accused the utility company of failing to de-energize its electrical equipment “despite red flag warnings from the National Weather Service,” the outlet reported.
The Threads post, which has received over 1,000 likes as of writing, claims three Trump supporters were purportedly spotted at the source of all three recent fires in Los Angeles.
“SO….! Apparently LAPD are looking for three’ persons of interest,’ all tied to a MAGA website and who were spotted at the source of all three major LA fires. This might have been the opening salvo in Trump’s war against any State he considers an ‘enemy within,'” the post reads.
The claim is false. Check Your Fact did not find the claim referenced on the LAPD’s website or its verified social media accounts. Likewise, the Los LAFD also does not appear to have publicly commented on the claim. Trump hasn’t made a statement regarding the claim, either.
In addition, Check Your Fact found no credible news reports to support the claim. Actually, the opposite is true. On Jan. 13, USA Today debunked the claim. The outlet cited Jan. 8 and 9 press conferences in which the LAFD stated the cause of the fires remains unknown and an investigation is currently underway.
At least 24 people have been killed as a result of the recent fires in California, according to Forbes. (RELATED: No, The Hollywood Sign Is Not Currently On Fire)
Check Your Fact has contacted both the LAPD and the LAFD for comment.
