An image shared on X claims to show the USS Harry S. Truman under attack.

Verdict: False

The image is from Reddit and shows a hypothetical hypersonic missile attack on an aircraft carrier.

Fact Check:

Social media users are claiming an image shows a Houthi attack on the USS Harry S. Truman. One user wrote, “The armed forces carried out a military operation targeting the American aircraft carrier USS Harry Truman and several of its warships with a number of cruise missiles and drones in the northern Red Sea, forcing them to leave the area of operations and flee to the far northern Red Sea.”

This claim is false. Through a reverse image search, Check Your Fact found that the image is from Reddit. The image was shared in 2023 and says it shows a “US Carrier Fleet Intercepts Incoming Hypersonic Missiles by jeffbearholy.”

The Houthis claimed to have targeted the Truman and its escorts in a Jan. 11 X post from its spokesperson. The claim also states that the Truman withdrew fled to the northern part of the Red Sea.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has not acknowledged the attack but did publish a statement on X stating that CENTCOM commander Gen. Michael Kurilla visited the Truman.

“On 12 January, Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, Commander of United States Central Command (CENTCOM), visited the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) as it operated in the Red Sea as part of ongoing operations in the region and one of the most strategically significant waterways in the world,” reads part of the statement.
