Verdict: False

In July 2024, O’Donnell announced she’d be leaving the CBS “Evening News” program after the 2024 presidential election, according to Puck News.

Fact Check:

CBS News staffers reportedly said they are “excited and fearful” following O’Donnell’s exit from the “Evening News,” according to The Independent. The staffers also claimed “nothing was really working” under O’Donnell’s leadership, the outlet indicated.

The Threads post, which has received 2,000 likes as of writing, claims O’Donnell was fired by CBS News.

“NOW: CBS NEWS’ Norah ODonnell, who famously fact-checked JD Vance during the Vice Presidential debate, has been fired after five years in the anchor chair,” the post reads. The post includes a video of O’Donnell signing off on her last broadcast with help from talk show host Oprah Winfrey.

The claim is false. In July 2024, Puck News reported that O’Donnell would be “[stepping] down as anchor and managing editor of [the] ‘CBS Evening News’ after this year’s presidential election.” According to the outlet, O’Donnell has “struck a new, long-term, sinecure-ish deal with the network to focus on major cross-platform interview specials while continuing to contribute to [the] ‘Evening News,’ ’60 Minutes,’ and other CBS programs.”

Likewise, the claim is neither referenced on CBS News’ website nor on its verified social media accounts. O’Donnell also does not appear to have publicly commented on the claim. (RELATED: Was Biden’s Farewell Speech Pre-Recorded?)

In addition, Check Your Fact did not find any credible news reports to support the claim. Actually, the opposite is true. On Jan. 24, PolitiFact debunked the claim.

O’Donnell signed off on her last CBS “Evening News” broadcast on Jan. 23.

Check Your Fact has contacted a CBS News spokesperson for comment.
