Verdict: False
The purported remark is not found via an advanced search of Musk’s verified X account @elonmusk, and there is no other evidence to support the claim.
Fact Check:
Zelenskyy recently said he’s ready to “resign” as Ukraine’s leader if it would bring peace to the country, according to CNN. Zelenskyy also pushed back on President Donald Trump’s demand for a $500 billion share of Ukraine’s critical minerals, the outlet reported.
The Threads image, which has received over 500 likes as of writing, purports to show an X post from Musk saying he would suspend Zelenskyy’s account.
“We are looking into suspending Ukraine Propagandist Zelenskyy’s account. Let me be clear. I will not lose sleep over removing this r-tard [censorship added] from this platform,” the purported X post attributed to Musk reads.
“X needs [to be] banned from the Apple and Google apps stores immediately. He doesn’t even pretend to be for free speech anymore,” the image’s caption reads.
The claim is false. Check Your Fact performed an advanced search of Musk’s verified X account @elonmusk and did not find any reference to the purported remark. Likewise, Zelenskyy does not appear to have publicly commented on the claim via his verified X account @ZelenskyyUa. Trump has not mentioned the claim, either. In addition, Check Your Fact found no credible news reports to support the claim. Actually, the opposite is true. On Feb. 24, PolitiFact debunked the claim. According to the outlet, Musk has repeatedly criticized Zelenskyy on X but spells the Ukrainian President’s last name with one “y,” not two.
Check Your Fact has contacted Musk for comment.
