A post shared on Facebook claims Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar has purportedly been collecting her late grandmother’s $2,308 monthly Social Security checks for almost 10 years.

Verdict: False

The claim is false and originally stems from a Feb. 20 post shared by “America’s Last Line of Defense,” which is a satirical Facebook page.

Fact Check:

Texas Republican Rep. Brandon Gill reportedly sent out a fundraising email with a petition calling to deport Omar, according to a Feb. 11 article from Axios. Omar responded to the email, accusing Gill of “[attempting] to clout chase,” the outlet indicated.

The Facebook post claims Omar has purportedly been collecting her late grandmother’s $2,308 monthly Social Security checks for almost 10 years. “No wonder they’re so opposed to audits,” text that appears on an image of Omar featured in the post reads.

Besides Facebook, a similar iteration of the claim circulated on Threads, suggesting Omar had purportedly collected $2,100 monthly Social Security checks.

The claim is false and originally stems from a Feb. 20 post shared by “America’s Last Line of Defense,” which is a satirical Facebook page. The Facebook page describes itself as “the flagship of the ALLOD network of trollery and propaganda for cash” before reiterating that “nothing on this page is real.”

Likewise, Check Your Fact did not find any reference to the claim on Omar’s website or her verified social media accounts. The Social Security Administration (SSA) does not appear to have publicly commented on the claim. In addition, neither the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) nor its lead, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has mentioned the claim. Check Your Fact also did not find any credible news reports to support the claim. Actually, the opposite is true. On Feb. 26, Snopes debunked the claim, tracing its origin to the same satirical Facebook page.

Check Your Fact has contacted Omar’s office for comment.
