A viral image shared on X claims to show a BBC headline accusing Tesla CEO and Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) lead Elon Musk of “wasting everyone’s time and money.”

Verdict: False

The purported headline is neither found via searches of the BBC’s website nor its verified social media accounts.

Fact Check:

The Trump administration and DOGE are reportedly planning to fire the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB)’s nearly 1,700 employees, NBC News reported, citing testimony from employees. The workforce cuts are slated to occur in three phases, according to an anonymous employee, the outlet indicated.

The X image, viewed two million times as of writing, claims to show a BBC headline about Musk. “REPORT: Elon Musk is wasting everyone’s time and money, and serves no real purpose,” the purported headline reads. What appears to be a logo for “BBC News” is visible on the top right corner of the image, which features Musk. “The BBC is correct,” the image’s caption follows.

The claim is false. Check Your Fact did not find the purported headline about Musk via a search of the BBC’s website or its verified social media accounts. Likewise, Musk does not appear to have commented on the claim via his verified X account @elonmusk. DOGE also has not referenced the claim on its website or its verified X account @DOGE.

In addition, Check Your Fact did not find any credible news reports to support the claim. Actually, the opposite is true. On Feb. 27, Lead Stories debunked the claim, indicating the image is “fake.” (RELATED: Video Removes Context Around Musk And Son)
