FACT CHECK: Facebook Post Falsely Claims Elon Musk Has Acquired MSNBC For $900 Million
A post shared on Facebook claims Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) lead and Tesla CEO Elon Musk has purportedly acquired MSNBC for $900 million.
Verdict: False
The purported remark is not referenced on Musk’s verified X account @elonmusk, and there is no other evidence to support the claim.
Fact Check:
A recent national NBC News poll shows 46% of voters say creating DOGE was a “good idea,” according to the outlet. The same poll shows that 40% of voters say creating DOGE was a “bad idea,” NBC News indicated.
The Facebook post, which has received over 600 likes, claims Musk has purportedly acquired MSNBC for $900 million.
“7 MINUTES AGO: Elon Musk announced that he has acquired MSNBC for $900 million to put an end to toxic programming. Full story below,” the post reads. A comment shared on the post includes a link to an article that repeats the claim.
The claim is false. According to the same article shared via the Facebook post, Musk purportedly made a post on X announcing his alleged acquisition of MSNBC. Check Your Fact performed an advanced search of Musk’s verified X profile @elonmusk and did not find any reference to the claim. Likewise, the claim does not appear on MSNBC’s website or its verified social media accounts. President Donald Trump has not publicly commented on the claim, either.
In addition, Check Your Fact found no credible news reports to support the claim. If Musk had actually acquired MSNBC for $900 million, multiple outlets would’ve covered it, yet none have. Actually, the opposite is true.
On March 14, Lead Stories debunked the claim. According to Lead Stories, the claim follows a November 2024 X post from Donald Trump, Jr., in which he appeared to encourage Musk to buy MSNBC. “How much does it cost?” Musk responded to Trump, Jr.’s post.
