A viral post shared on X claims Chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, Warren Buffett, has purportedly bought Tesla stock for $1 trillion in cash.

The claim is false and originally stems from an April 1 article published on the website “GOBankingRates.” A disclaimer included at the end of the article indicates it is satirical and meant to be an April Fool’s Day joke.

Cooper Jo Frederick, a 24-year-old man from Colorado, is facing federal charges for allegedly igniting an incendiary device and hurling it at a local Tesla dealership, according to Fox News. Prosecutors are seeking a 20-year prison sentence for Frederick, the outlet reported, citing remarks from Attorney General Pam Bondi.
The X post, viewed over 60,000 times as of writing, claims Buffett has purportedly bought Tesla stock for $1 trillion in cash.
“BREAKING: 🚨 Warren Buffet buys Tesla $TSLA stock for $1 Trillion in cash. Finally @Tesla,” the post reads. The post also features what appears to be a screenshot of a headline that repeats the claim.
The claim is false and originally stems from an April 1 article published on the website “GOBankingRates.” A disclaimer included at the end of the article indicates it is satirical and meant to be an April Fool’s Day joke.
“APRIL FOOLS! This article is entirely satirical and was published on April 1, 2025. Warren Buffett has not acquired Tesla, and all quotes and information in this piece are fictional,” the disclaimer states. Likewise, Check Your Fact found no reference to the claim on Tesla’s website or its verified X account @Tesla. An advanced search of Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s verified X account @elonmusk also did not generate any mention of the claim. Buffett does not appear to have publicly addressed the claim, either.
In addition, Check Your Fact found no credible news reports to support the claim. If Buffett, a public figure, had truly bought Tesla stock for $1 trillion in cash, multiple media outlets would’ve covered it, yet none have. Actually, the opposite is true. Both Snopes and Newsweek debunked the claim, tracing its origin to the same satirical article published by “GoBankingRates.”
