FACT CHECK: Viral X Video Shows Brazilian Soccer Fans, Not Pro-Palestinian Protest

A viral video shared on X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter, purports to show a pro-Palestinian protest in France despite the country banning protests of the sort.

Verdict: Misleading

The video shows Brazilian soccer fans marching to Allianz Parque in Sao Paulo, not a pro-Palestinian protest in France. France did ban all pro-Palestinian protests, according to an Oct. 12 article from CNN, however.

Fact Check:

French Jewish groups have set up a hotline to provide support to those who have lost loved ones in the current Israel-Hamas conflict or are experiencing anxiety as a result of the war, The Associated Press reported. The organizers behind the hotline have received dozens of calls daily, according to the outlet.

“France has BANNED pro-Palestinian protests,” the X video, viewed over 500,000 times, purports. In the video, a large crowd can be seen walking across a bridge while chanting.

The video is not linked to pro-Palestinian protests, though. The video shows Brazilian soccer fans marching to Allianz Parque, according to its original iteration, which was posted to the platform on Oct. 5.

“Palmeiras fans are marching to Allianz Parque,” the video’s caption reads.

The Sociedad Esportiva Palmeiras, also known as Palmeiras, played the Boca Juniors on Oct. 5 at Allianz Parque in Sao Paulo, Brazil, according to ESPN. The Boca Juniors, who hail from Argentina, beat the Palmeiras after a one to one draw, The Associated Press reported.

In addition, although the viral X video does not show a pro-Palestinian protest in France, France did ban all protests of the sort, according to an Oct. 12 article from CNN. French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said the protests were banned over concerns about “disturbances to public order,” the outlet indicated.

Despite the ban being announced, hundreds of pro-Palestinian protestors gathered in Paris on Oct. 12. (RELATED: Video Claims To Show Israeli Troops Fighting With Hamas)

French President Emmanuel Macron has not publicly referenced the viral X video purporting to show pro-Palestinian protests in France amid the country’s ban.
