Fact Check:
A post made on X claims that Trump spoke ill of Republican voters during a 1998 People magazine interview. The caption reads, “Straight from the horse’s mouth! Trump knew Democrats were too smart to fall for his bullsh*t! #KamalaShowsUpForUs.”
The post contains an image of Trump with quoted text that reads, “If I were to run, I’d run as a Republican. They’re the dumbest group of voters in the country. They believe anything on Fox News. I could lie and they’d still eat it up. I bet my numbers would be terrific.”
The post claims that the alleged quote is from a 1998 People magazine interview. People has no record of a 1998 interview with former President Trump, according to Factcheck.org. (RELATED: No, Trump Did Not Suggest ‘The Purge’)
This is not the first time the alleged quote has circulated online. In 2019, Check Your Fact debunked a Facebook post with the same claim. A People spokesperson told Check Your Fact at the time that the quote did not appear in any of its issues.
Check Your Fact has reached out to People and Trump’s communications team for comment.
