Fact Check:
Hurricane Milton greatly disrupted tourism in Orlando, Florida. According to The Associated Press, theme parks and Orlando International Airport were forced to close prior to Hurricane Milton making landfall.
A post made on X claims that Walt Disney World in Orlando flooded once Hurricane Milton made landfall. The claim is false. There is no credible evidence that shows Disney World flooded during Hurricane Milton. The images included with the post appear to be AI-generated. One of the images depicts Cinderella’s Castle and lacks a Walt Disney statue that has been in front of the castle since 1995.
Hive Moderation, which has an AI-Image tool designed to detect images that are artificial, rates all of the aforementioned images with a high probability of being faked.
When asked for comment, the City of Orlando’s Public Information Officer told Check Your Fact, “we have not heard of any such claims.”
Walt Disney World’s attractions have been specifically designed to withstand hurricanes. According to People, Disney World has its own power sources and its castle was built from concrete and cement. Check Your Fact has reached out to The Walt Disney Company for comment.
The Walt Disney World website has already announced that its parks will re-open on October 11th. The announcement reads, “We’re grateful Walt Disney World Resort weathered the storm. Walt Disney World theme parks and Disney Springs will reopen on Friday, October 11 for the scheduled operating hours. Our hearts are with our fellow Floridians who were impacted by this storm.”
