There is, however, no record of the Michigan governor ever making the remark. A search of Whitmer’s verified social media accounts turned up no matches. Nor has any credible media outlet quoted her as saying the comment.

“This is completely false information,” a spokesperson for Whitmer told PolitiFact. “Posts like these are being spread across social media platforms to create rumors and fear.”

As of press time, the new coronavirus has sickened over 1.6 million people and killed nearly 99,000 others in the U.S., per the Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center. Michigan has reported over 55,100 confirmed coronavirus cases and 5,200 deaths to date, according to data from the state’s official website.
