A video shared on Twitter claims to show weird anomalies in the skies above Turkey and Syria before the earthquake.

Verdict: False

The video is from 2018, predating the Turkey earthquake, and shows a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launch in California.

Fact Check:

Over 42,000 people have been killed following an earthquake that struck Syria and Turkey Feb. 6, according to The Guardian. Over 35,000 people have been killed in Turkey, while 5,800 people have died in Syria, AlJazeera reported.

The Twitter video claims to show a strange occurrence in the skies above Turkey and Syria “seconds” before the earthquakes struck. The video has been viewed over 77,000 times.

However, through a reverse image search, Check Your Fact found that the video is from 2018. The video, posted to YouTube in October 2018, claims to show a Space X Falcon 9 launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

“Minutes earlier, the Falcon 9 rocket had leapt off the pad, tasked with delivering Argentina’s newest Earth-observing satellite—SAOCOMM-1A— into space,” reads part of the description. “Without a single cloud in the night sky, the Falcon’s pyrotechnics were on full display. Exhaust from the rocket undulated through the atmosphere like ripples across a pond. Residents across the state caught sight of the unusual light show, as portions of the rocket’s flight were illuminated by the last bits of light lingering from a sun that had already set.”

There was a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launch on Oct. 7, 2018, according to Space.com. The outlet also posted several images of the launch and the aftermath. (RELATED: Does This Video Show An ‘Ascension’ Occurring After The Recent Earthquake In Turkey?)

This is not the first time misinformation involving the recent earthquake and pet rescues has spread online. Check Your Fact recently debunked a video claiming to show cats right before the earthquakes.
