FACT CHECK: Did Elon Musk Ban Greta Thunberg From Twitter?
A post shared on Facebook purports Twitter CEO Elon Musk allegedly banned 20-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg from the social media platform.
Verdict: False
The claim stems from a satirical website. There is no evidence supporting the claim.
Fact Check:
Musk praised Thunberg as “cool” in a December 2022 tweet following a viral argument between the 20-year-old climate activist and social media influencer Andrew Tate, according to The Independent. The Tesla CEO acquired the social media platform for $44 billion back in October, The New York Times reported.
The Facebook post, liked over 700 times, purports Musk allegedly banned Thunberg from Twitter. “Good job Elon,” the post’s caption reads.
The claim is false. There are no credible news reports suggesting Musk has banned the 20-year-old climate activist from Twitter. Likewise, Musk has not publicly commented on the purported claim. Thunberg also has not addressed the purported claim via her verified Twitter account. (RELATED: Did Greta Thunberg Respond To A Fabricated Image Of Her?)
The claim stems from a Mar. 7 article published on the website “SpaceXMania.” The site indicates it publishes satirical content related to “Musk, SpaceX and everything in between” via its “About Us” page.
A separate “Disclaimer” page reiterates the site’s content is not meant to be taken literally. “SpaceXMania does not make any warranties about the completeness, reliability, and accuracy of this information,” the disclaimer reads in part. A tab marked “Satire” on the site’s masthead redirects users to its satirical content.
The satirical article published on the website purports Musk supposedly banned Thunberg from Twitter because he was “fed up with [her] constant tweets about climate change and calls for action to save the planet.”
