Verdict: False
The claim neither appears on CNN’s website nor its verified social media accounts. A CNN spokesperson denied the outlet had reported that Cheney endorsed DeSantis in an email to Check Your Fact.
Fact Check:
DeSantis launched his 2024 presidential campaign Wednesday, according to Fox News. He officially announced his 2024 presidential bid at 6 p.m. via Twitter Spaces alongside the social media platform’s CEO Elon Musk, CNBC reported.
“LIZ CHENEY ENDORSES RON DESANTIS FOR PRESIDENT – CNN,” the Twitter post, viewed over 130,000 times, purports.
The claim is false. CNN has neither published an article on its website nor a statement via its verified social media accounts reporting Cheney endorsed DeSantis for president in the 2024 election. Likewise, the claim is not referenced on the Republican Florida Governor’s website or verified social media accounts.
Cheney also has not publicly made a statement endorsing DeSantis or responding to the claim on Twitter. The last tweet Cheney posted on May 10 called out former President Donald Trump over the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
In addition, Check Your Fact found no credible news reports supporting the claim. If Cheney actually endorsed DeSantis, multiple media outlets would have covered it. (RELATED: Video Of DeSantis And Pence Meeting Is From 2020.)
A CNN spokesperson denied the outlet had reported that Cheney endorsed DeSantis in an email to Check Your Fact.
“CNN has not reported that,” the spokesperson said.
This is not the first time a false claim involving CNN has circulated online. Check Your Fact previously debunked a social media post purporting the outlet announced there would be no more live audiences at their town halls following a recent event featuring Trump.
