Verdict: Misleading
11 Leopard 2 tanks have been visually confirmed to have been destroyed or damaged, according to military analysis website Oryx. An additional 3 Leopard mine clearing tanks have been destroyed or damaged.
Fact Check:
The Twitter video, which shows loitering munitions striking what appears to be a Leopard tank, claims that “68 Leopards (of all sorts) have been destroyed since their introduction into Ukraine.” The tweet has over 185,000 views.
This claim, however, is misleading. If 68 Leopard tanks provided to Ukraine had been destroyed, media outlets would have reported on it, yet none have. Check Your Fact conducted a wider internet search and did not find any credible sources reporting 68 Ukrainian Leopard tanks as destroyed.
Furthermore, while 100 Leopard 2 tanks were pledged to Ukraine pending German approval in January 2023, 61 Leopard 2 tanks and 6 Leopard 2 mining tanks have been confirmed delivered, according to Oryx. Forbes reported 95 tanks have been delivered.
Out of these 68-95 tanks that have been delivered, 11 Leopard 2 tanks have been visually confirmed to be destroyed or damaged, according to Oryx. An additional Leopard 2R mine clearing tanks have been destroyed or damaged as well.
“This list only includes destroyed vehicles and equipment of which photo or videographic evidence is available. Therefore, the amount of equipment destroyed is significantly higher than recorded here,” Oryx warns.
This is not the first time a false claim about the Russian-Ukrainian war has gone viral. Check Your Fact previously debunked a Twitter video purporting Zelenskyy said he did not know who blew up the Kerch Bridge.
