FACT CHECK: Viral X Image Does Not Show Gaza Crisis Actor

A viral image shared on X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter, purports to show a Gaza crisis actor pretending to be a dead child killed by Israel amid the current Israel-Hamas conflict.

Verdict: False

The image was originally posted to Facebook in October 2022 and shows a child participating in a Halloween costume contest hosted by Thailand’s Central Korat mall.

Fact Check:

A recent Israeli airstrike targeting a Hamas leader has killed a large number of people, according to CNN. The strike hit the Jabalya refugee camp in Gaza, the outlet reported.

“One of Gaza’s crisis actors got bored pretending to be a dead child killed by Israel. Side note- isn’t it incredible how many days his phone battery is lasting? Considering Gaza claims to be without electricity,” the X image’s caption purports. In the image, an individual wrapped in a plain white sheet can be seen looking down at a mobile phone. The image has garnered over 20,000 views as of writing.

The image does not show a Gaza crisis and actor and is not linked to the current Israel-Hamas conflict, however. The image was originally posted to Facebook in October 2022 and shows a child participating in a Halloween costume contest hosted by Thailand’s Central Korat mall. Included in the post are three other photos showing the child in costume next to a friend.

Likewise, the same photo of the two children in costume was shared via the Central Korat mall’s public Facebook page in a post providing more details about the contest.

The photo does not appear in any credible news reports about the current Israel-Hamas conflict. (RELATED: Video Showing Iron Dome Is Not From Oct. 26)

Multiple claims about crisis actors staging events in relation to the current Israel-Hamas conflict have been debunked by outlets, including The Associated Press, Poynter, Politifact, and France24.
