A video shared on X claims to show Gaza residents reacting to Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar’s death.

Verdict: False

The video was shared nearly two weeks before Sinwar’s death. It reportedly shows a man mourning the loss of his family.

Fact Check:

Sinwar was killed by Israel Defense Forces (IDF) troops in Rafah on Oct. 16, according to BBC News. Sinwar was discovered by an Israeli patrol and without any hostages, the outlet reported.

Social media users are sharing a video claiming to show Gaza residents mourning the death of Sinwar. One user partially wrote, “The population in Gaza is coping with the death of arch-terrorist Yahya Sinwar. Now, if you compare their cries of grief with the cheers they expressed on October 7th, a clear pattern emerges that we must acknowledge and act accordingly.”

This claim is false. The video is from Oct. 7, 2024, nearly two weeks before Sinwar’s death. The video allegedly shows a man mourning the death of his 12th brother, with his 11 other brothers being killed by Israel.

“Israel murdered 11 of his brothers previously, and today, he is struck by the loss of his twelfth brother, who was also killed. A scene from the ongoing genocide in Gaza that has continued for one whole year…” reads the tweet. (RELATED: FACT CHECK: No, Video Does Not Show Su-24 Shot Down By F-16)

Check Your Fact could not independently verify this claim. However, Sinwar was killed on Oct. 16th, nine days after this video originally was posted. Therefore, the claim it shows Gaza residents mourning Sinwar’s death is false.
