FACT CHECK: Did Megan Rapinoe Leave The U.S. Because Donald Trump Won The Election?
A post on Facebook claims that American soccer star Megan Rapinoe booked tickets to leave the U.S. following Donald Trump’s re-election.
Verdict: False
There is no proof that she has bought tickets or is planning to in the future.
Fact Check:
U.S. Women’s soccer star Megan Rapinoe retired from professional play in July 2023 after a career that spanned almost 18 years and included three World Cup appearances. Rapinoe is also known for her activism outside of soccer, claiming that her work is “just as important” as her accomplishments on-field, according to Bleacher Report.
A post on Facebook claims that Rapinoe, along with ‘The View’ host Whoopi Goldberg, purchased tickets to leave America following the re-election of President Donald Trump. The post claims that the two said, “This isn’t our America,” and implies that the two will immigrate elsewhere for good. (RELATED: Did Gordon Ramsey Kick Megan Rapinoe Our Of His Restaurant?)
There is no proof that this has happened, or that the two have made plans to do so in the future. Rapinoe’s official X page has not been posted on since July 25, and her Instagram feed, which has been updated recently, does not have any posts alluding to a plan of leaving. Whoopi Goldberg has not announced plans to leave the U.S. as of press time, either.
Rapinoe, a loyal Democrat party voter, reflected on their election loss recently, saying they “missed the mark on some things.” She has frequently been the target of misinformation on Facebook, which Check Your Fact has debunked in the past.
