FACT CHECK: No, The World Health Organization Is Not Abandoning Its Pandemic Prevention Treaty

A post shared on Facebook claims the World Health Organization (WHO) is abandoning its pandemic prevention treaty.

Verdict: False

The claim is baseless. There is no evidence the WHO is abandoning the pandemic treaty.

Fact Check:

Wisconsin Republican Sen. Ron Johnson has urged President Joe Biden to reject any agreements that would give the WHO more authority in the case of another pandemic, according to Fox News. The agreements are expected to be discussed at the 77th World Health Assembly taking place from May 27 to June 1, the outlet reported.

A Facebook post claims the WHO has abandoned its pandemic treaty. The post shares the information with white text and a purple background.

“BREAKING: The WHO has abandoned its contentious Pandemic Treaty following public discourse and backlash,” the text reads.

This claim is baseless, however. There are no credible news reports about the pandemic treaty being discarded. Likewise, there are no matching search results on the WHO’s website about the claim.   (RELATED: Is The World Health Organization Demanding Surveillance Powers For ‘Disease Control’?)

The goal of the agreement is to “prepare the world for preventing and responding to future pandemics, built on consensus, solidarity and equity,” according to the WHO website. The site also references a draft of the agreement.

This is not true,” a WHO spokesperson said to Check Your Fact in an email. The spokesperson referenced a page on the WHO website with more information about the treaty.

This is not the first time misinformation involving the WHO has spread online. Check Your Fact previously debunked a claim that the U.S. Marines arrested a WHO official.
