A video shared on social media purports that House Speaker Mike Johnson claimed that women have a duty to birth at least one able bodied worker.

Verdict: False

The caption is inaccurate.

Fact Check:

Speaker Johnson recently proposed an aid package to Israel of $14.3 billion which included cutting the IRS budget, The Hill reported. This caused several House Democrats to oppose the package.

The X post purports Johnson called upon women to birth “one able-bodied worker.” The post shared a short clip of Johnson speaking about abortion.

The caption reads, “Chinese President Xi: ‘Every … woman has a duty to birth at least one able-bodied worker.’ Wait… That wasn’t Xi. Or any communist. That was GOP Speaker of the House Mike Johnson. A Handmaid’s Tale describes a utopian paradise for this man.”

The claim is inaccurate. There are no credible news reports that Johnson ever made any such claim. The caption misquotes Johnson and does not reflect the statement he made. The clip is from a House Judiciary Committee in May 2022 in which Johnson claimed that abortion has had an effect on the economy and specifically social security benefits because there would be more future able-bodied workers if not for abortion.

Johnson was discussing the Supreme Court leak of their decision on the Dobbs v. Jackson case that resulted in the overturning of Roe V. Wade, according to CNN. Johnson claimed that Roe v. Wade led to the loss of 63 million American children. (RELATED: Video Of Pakistani Air Force Is Old)

This is not the first piece of misinformation that has been shared online. Check Your Fact debunked a claim 100 Turkish Navy warships have moved toward Gaza.
