FACT CHECK: Did Melania Trump Say She Wants A Divorce?
A post shared on Facebook claims that former first lady Melania Trump said in October 2024 that she wants a divorce.
Verdict: False
There is no evidence that Melania Trump said this month that she wanted a divorce.
Fact Check:
In March, CNN reported that former first lady Melania Trump hinted at returning to her husband’s side on the campaign trail, a year and a half after she was seen at the campaign’s kickoff in Nov. 2022. The former first lady has been noticeably off the campaign trail during her husband’s re-election efforts, contributing to rumors about the couple growing distant. Back in February, reporters asked the former president about his wife’s absence, to which Trump replied that Melania is a “private person” who “loves the country,” per Newsweek.
On Oct. 14, a post appeared on Facebook claiming, “Melania Trump declares that she wants a divorce.” The post described the claim as “breaking news” and an “October surprise.”
However, the claim does not cite any sources and is not backed by any reputable reporting or evidence. Lead Stories noted that no documents have been filed by the former first lady in Palm Beach County, Florida, where the Trump family has lived in a residence at the Mar-a-Lago Club. There are no reports that Melania expressed her desire for a divorce at any point during the 2024 presidential election cycle.
On Oct. 3, the Associated Press reported the former first lady’s views on abortion. Melania’s thoughts on the top priority issue were revealed ahead of her memoir release next week, presenting a contrast to the long-standing anti-abortion policy stance of the Republican party. The recent clash in policy opinion between the former president and his wife have triggered renewed speculation about trouble between the couple. Sunny Hostin of The View even ventured to say that Melania “hates” her husband and shared her pro-abortion views as a form of “undercutting” his chances in the ballot box. But this is not the first time that Trump divorce rumors have circulated online. In September 2022, a claim surfaced that the couple had gotten a divorce. The root of the statement, however, was satirical, as reported at the time by Check Your Fact. Last month, a fake image presenting an article from Newsweek similarly claimed that the two had divorced. However, Check Your Fact received confirmation from the outlet that the claim was false.
