FACT CHECK: Video Shows Balinese Ritual, Not Dead Palestinians
A video shared on Facebook claims to show dead Palestinians.
Verdict: False
The video shows a Balinese ritual, not dead Palestinians.
Fact Check:
The Hamas-controlled Gaza Ministry of Health claimed that 10,000 Palestinians have died in Israel’s campaign against the Gaza Strip, according to CNN. This number could not be independently verified by CNN, the outlet reported.
Social media users have been sharing a video claiming to show dead Palestinians. One user wrote, “To say that these are the bodies of Palestinian Muslims, but if you feel them, you will see the bodies of the entire Ummah. These corpses belong to the callous conscience of the so-called Islamic countries and the rulers chained to Western slavery.”
This claim, however, is false. Through a reverse image search, Check Your Fact found that the video was taken in October 2022, a year before the current conflict. The video was shared on YouTube with the title, “108 WATANGAN ‼️ Calonarang Sacred Mandala at Mario Tabanan Building.” (RELATED: Video Claims To Show Hamas Terrorist Shot By IDF)
Boom Live, an Indian fact-checking outlet, reported that the “video captures a Calonarang performance which took place on October 30, 2022, at the I Ketut Maria Art Building in Indonesia.”
“The story of Calon Arang has a connection with the mythological creature Leak. The story of Calon Arang is performed in dramas and dances in Bali,” Adi Syafitrah, an Indonesian fact-checker, told Boom Live.
Misinformation around the recent Israeli-Hamas conflict is not new. Check Your Fact recently debunked a claim that 100 Turkish Navy warships have moved toward Gaza.
